The first students had everything organised and arranged so that they led a life of study and meditation in the style of monks and religious Orders. They had to dress in the style of priests, with a "loba" (a type of cassock) and a "manteo" (a long cloak without a collar). Their dress had to be decent, but not obstentatious and they were forbidden expensive adornments and lively colours, silk and fine fabrics, consequently they used black.

In the Tuna, nowadays, the use of the cloak has been maintained in the Tuna costume, but they no longer use the student´s loba or cassock.

The student´s cloak, a faithful and warm companion of the Tuno on the 'noches de ronda' (the nights of serenading) is used to hide them, so that they can see without being seen; to protect them from the cold, the rain and the inclemency of the weather; to hide the instrument, various drinking recipients and, of course, female companions...

Nowadays it´s tradition that the cloak of the Tuno is hung with ribbons, normally silk and different colours, where women who want to can embroider dedications and loving phrases to each tuno. It´s also tradition for the Tuna to sew on the same cloak the fabric Coat of Arms of the different countries and cities where he has been on his different trips with his Tuna.

It is, as such, the most important piece of both the Tuna costume and the life of the Tuno because it´s a reflection of his seniority, status and activity in the Tuna. It faithfully reflects his capacity to love and travel, two of the most important aspects of being a Tuno. Throughout his time in the Tuna, a Tuno may may have different costumes and different instruments, but he will only ever have one cloak.
